Family vacations, beautiful weather, and summer barbeques– what’s not to love about this time of year? Unfortunately, things like sunburnt skin, heat rash, bug bites, poison ivy, (the list goes on) can get you feeling down! But we want to share a few summer health tips to help you make the most of the season and hopefully stay happy and healthy.

1. Go all out with the SPF.

Rubbing on a little sunscreen to your arms and shoulders isn’t going to cut it, especially if you are going to be outside for long periods of time, will be swimming, or are prone to sweating a lot. Protecting your skin from the sun should include the following:

  • At least SPF 30 reapplied every 2 hours
  • Be careful when applying spray sunscreen that it actually covers your skin and doesn’t get blown away by the breeze!
  • Apply sunscreen to your face, neck, ears, hands, and even your scalp if you aren’t wearing a hat. Powder sunscreen is great for not making your hair and scalp oily!
  • Wear rash guards or breathable clothing with long sleeves whenever possible.
  • Make sure your sunglasses have UV protection– your eyes and the skin around them are super sensitive!

2. Rein in seasonal allergies and pesky bugs.

3. Hydrate creatively.

We get it, no one likes to drink glass after glass of water when fun drinks like soda, juice, sweet tea, and smoothies exist! But the fastest way to heat exhaustion and dehydration is by passing over water for more enticing beverages. Make your water a little more appealing by adding sliced fruit like lemons and limes and fresh herbs such as mint. You should also add more foods with high water content to your diet during the summer– watermelon, cucumbers, celery, tomatoes, strawberries, cantaloupe, pineapple, and zucchini all help your body stay hydrated, but remember, drinking water must always be a top priority!

4. Try a new seasonal activity or exercise.

One of the best summer health tips we have is to go out and try a new outdoor activity or exercise. Not only does exercising provide physical benefits but it also helps with mental health and stress, not to mention the social aspect of exercise! You can bond with your significant other, kids, and other loved ones while doing something fun and exciting! A few examples could be a water aerobics class, frisbee golf, pickleball, hiking or biking a local trail.
